Technology
The Foundations principles have over 15 years experience with
development and application of a variety of technologies including:
solar heating systems, rural and village water supply, wind
energy, rural transportation, and low cost housing.
Our current work is to develop a micro-enterprise-based briquetting
technology , which converts non-productive agricultural residues,
yard wastes and junk mail into economic and environmentally
sound heating and cooking fuel for families and communities
in developing countries and the USA.
In developing nations, the briquettes are sold in the open market
as a less expensive alternative to fuelwood. Briquette projects
provide employment , especially to women, while saving the environment.
In the USA, the emphasis is on research and development of a
technology for families and community to turn their junk mail
into a useable fuel including the development of a compact,
efficient briquette making machine. The Legacy Foundation is
also testing emissions from the briquettes to ensure environmental
compliance.
Junk Mail into Briquettes:
As part of our research, Southern Oregon University and the
National Forensics Laboratories have tested sample briquettes
made from junk mail (under standardized laboratory conditions
and x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy) and found them to be no
more polluting than US Government certified wood pellets. Encouraged
by these results and spurred on by frequent inquiries for information
here in the States, Legacy Foundation technical staff are working
on the design and construction of a machine for the US household
market which will turn junk mail into burnable briquettes.
The machine should retail for less than a winter's fuel supply,
operate on less than three hp and require just a couple of Saturdays
to provide most of your winter hearth and recreational cooking
fuel.
The results:
- Your junk mail problem solved.
- Your trash output decreased.
- Your hearth and barbecue fuel costs reduced or completely
eliminated - depending upon how much junk mail you receive!!!
Just think, you may actually look forward to getting the
stuff!
We will be updating our web site as the R&D process moves
forward. Any contributions to this valuable exercise are always
welcome.
Chopping, threshing and mashing of the materials for briquetting
has always been limited to either a laborious hand pounding
or very expensive 5 or 10 Kw hammer milling machines. Legacy
has developed over the past year, a unique combination machine,
the TMC-1, which threshes, mashes and
chops a wide variety of materials efficiently. It is further
detailed in the products Services and Pricing section, accessed
here. Legacy has also been developing new mechanised and
semi-mechanical pressing equipment which are anticipated to
be out on the market within the next nine months, with adequate
support. |
